ROD OF WISDOM: PROTECT YOUR PEACE AND BE WISE

"Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." Prov.26:4
“[1] Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) [2] that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. [3] And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? [4] Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. ”
Nehemiah 6:1-4 KJV
INTRODUCTION
Wisdom is one of the greatest assets in navigating life's relationships, challenges and confrontations. It is not enough to know what to say; you must also know when to speak, when to remain silent and when to walk away. In a world filled with provocations, unnecessary controversies and deliberate distractions, the ability to exercise restraint is a mark of spiritual maturity and godly wisdom.
The Bible teaches us that not every confrontation deserves our participation and not every provocation requires a response. Through the example of Nehemiah, we discover that protecting your peace, preserving your energy and remaining focused on your God-given assignment are essential expressions of wisdom.
The greatest victory is not always in winning an argument, but in refusing to be distracted from your purpose.
1. NOT EVERY PROVOCATION DESERVES A RESPONSE
Engaging in baseless arguments, responding to foolish provocations, or entertaining unreasonable people can drag you down to their level. Not every accusation deserves a response, and not every provocation deserves your attention.
Wisdom is not merely the ability to speak; it is also the ability to discern when to remain silent. Sometimes, your silence is a greater demonstration of strength than your ability to win an argument.
2. THE NEHEMIAH EXAMPLE: REFUSE TO COME DOWN!
Nehemiah 6:1–9
When Sanballat and Tobiah heard that Nehemiah and his team had successfully rebuilt the broken walls of Jerusalem, with only the gates remaining to be installed, they intensified their opposition.
They devised several strategies to distract, intimidate and frustrate him.
First, they invited Nehemiah to meet them in the plain of Ono, under the pretence of having a discussion. However, their real intention was to harm him.
Nehemiah discerned their evil intentions and responded:
Nehemiah 6:3 (KJV)
"And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?"
What a profound demonstration of wisdom!
Nehemiah understood that accepting their invitation would mean abandoning his assignment and surrendering his time and energy to unnecessary distractions.
The enemies did not give up. They sent the same invitation four times, hoping that repeated pressure would make him change his mind. On each occasion, Nehemiah maintained his position and gave them the same response.
When their initial strategy failed, they escalated their attacks by sending an open letter containing false allegations. They accused him of plotting to make himself king over Judah and claimed that he had appointed prophets to proclaim him king in Jerusalem.
Their intention was to intimidate him, damage his reputation and create fear in his heart.
Yet, Nehemiah refused to be distracted by their fabricated allegations. He understood that the work in his hands was more important than engaging in endless arguments with his adversaries.
He remained focused on his assignment and refused to come down!
What a lesson in wisdom, discernment, emotional discipline and purposeful living!
3. EVERY GREAT ASSIGNMENT WILL ATTRACT OPPOSITION
Understand this: every worthwhile project, vision or assignment in your hands may attract opposition, false accusations, fabricated stories, insults and deliberate provocations.
Sometimes, the people opposing you will not necessarily attack your vision directly. Instead, they will attack your character, question your integrity, misrepresent your intentions and create situations designed to provoke you into abandoning your assignment.
Their objective is to shift your attention from your purpose to their distractions.
They want you to abandon the work and descend into unnecessary arguments, defensive explanations and undeserved confrontations.
Be careful! Not every invitation deserves your acceptance. Not every accusation requires your defence. Not every insult deserves a response. And not every disagreement deserves your participation.
Learn from Nehemiah. Remain focused on your assignment. Do not allow people who have no contribution to your vision to determine how you spend your time, energy and resources.
Sometimes, the wisest response is simply:
I AM DOING A GREAT WORK, AND I CANNOT COME DOWN!
*4. DO NOT COME DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL *
Every creature has its natural habitat where its abilities, strengths and survival instincts are best expressed. Consider the eagle and the python: the eagle's greatest advantage is in the air, while the python's strength lies on the ground.
For the eagle to overcome the python, it must leverage its advantage in the air rather than surrendering the battle to the python's natural territory. If the eagle allows itself to be drawn into a ground battle, it risks losing the very advantage that makes it powerful.
*Never abandon your place of strength to engage your adversaries at their level or on their own terms!
STAY UP! Refuse to be dragged into insults, threats, baseless arguments, needless controversies and unnecessary meetings designed to distract you from your purpose.
The enemy understands that if he cannot stop your vision directly, he may attempt to distract you through people, circumstances, accusations and provocations.
When you allow yourself to be consumed by unnecessary arguments, you surrender valuable time, emotional energy and attention that should have been invested in your assignment.
Do not allow anyone to pull you away from your purpose merely because they want your attention or demand that you defend yourself.
You do not have to attend every meeting, answer every question, respond to every allegation or participate in every debate.
Exercise discernment. Know when to speak, when to remain silent and when to walk away.
Remember: You cannot afford to come down from your assignment to entertain people whose intention is to distract you from fulfilling it.
5. WISDOM IS BETTER THAN STRENGTH
Ecclesiastes 9:16 (KJV)
"Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard."
Wisdom is knowing when to speak, when to remain silent and when to walk away.
It is the ability to exercise restraint in the face of insults, false accusations, temptations and provocations.
Do not sacrifice your peace trying to prove a point to someone who is committed to misunderstanding you.
Your assignment is too important, your time too valuable and your peace too precious to be wasted on every controversy.
Pray, exercise discernment, remain focused and protect your peace.
FINAL CHARGE
Not every battle deserves your energy. Not every accusation deserves your defence. Not every provocation deserves your reaction.
Sometimes, silence is the highest expression of wisdom.
Like Nehemiah, refuse to come down. Stay focused on the work God has committed into your hands. Do not allow the noise of opposition to silence the voice of your purpose.
PROTECT YOUR PEACE. PRESERVE YOUR STRENGTH. STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR ASSIGNMENT!
